Sinus Lifts

Getting a brand new, functional smile has never been easier with dental implants. Many people opt for this procedure if they have missing teeth, but sometimes this procedure is not possible because of immense bone loss from decay. However, a sinus lift is a great way to help patients get implants if they are suffering from bone loss.

At Maxillofacial Surgery Center Dr. Patrick A. Abbey, DMD, PA, Dr. Patrick Abbey offers all the treatments you need to achieve the healthiest smile possible.

What is a sinus lift, and why do I need one?

A sinus lift, otherwise known as a sinus augmentation, is a surgical procedure that helps patients with bone loss be eligible to get a dental implant. If you were ever told you are unable to have an implant placed due to bone loss, this procedure will add more bone to areas that were previously not strong enough to support an implant.

You may need a sinus lift if you have been missing teeth for many years. Without your teeth in place, your jawbone and other surrounding bones can decay even further. Periodontal disease is a main cause of bone loss. As you begin to experience bone loss, you might think dental implants cannot be a solution for you, but a sinus lift can completely change that.

With a sinus lift procedure, the amount of bone in your upper jaw increases. While Dr. Patrick Abbey lifts your sinus membrane, more bone is added between your premolars and molars, which creates a solid area to support an implant.

In this procedure, there are three bones that can be used:

  • An autogenous bone comes from elsewhere in your body
  • An allogeneic bone comes from outside of your body
  • A xenograft is bone is sourced from a cow to create the extra bone material you need

How do I begin my sinus lift procedure?

If we determine that you need extra bone to support your dental implants, our team will take X-rays to assess your sinuses and jaw. During the procedure, you may be sedated or given local anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable.

After your treatment, your sinus lift will heal for four to 12 months before we place your dental implants. You will be prescribed pain medication to help manage any discomfort you may have during the healing process. This medication may be over the counter or require a prescription.
